Celebrating the Next Generation: NRG’s Newly Qualified HGV Technicians

NRG Riverside recently held a two-day celebration at our head office to recognise a group of apprentices who have successfully completed their HGV Technician apprenticeships, marking the beginning of their careers as fully qualified technicians within the business.

The celebration brought the group together from across the country, giving them the opportunity to tour head office, meet our CEO and senior leaders, and gain a deeper understanding of how every part of NRG works together, from rental operations and finance to customer support and service delivery.

A Well-Structured, Supportive Programme

Reflecting on their apprenticeship journey, the group spoke proudly about the structure, support, and opportunities they received throughout their time with NRG.

“It was really well organised and well structured,” said one apprentice. “Everything was thought through, from the training plan to how we developed in the workshop.”

“There was so much support, from college lecturers to mentors in the depots,” another added. “You could always ask questions, get one-to-one help, and really build good relationships with people who wanted to see you succeed.”

The apprentices also highlighted the excellent facilities and learning environment provided by the college, describing it as “a supportive place where everyone helps each other out,” and praised the team spirit across the group.

In addition to the hands-on learning, many pointed out the benefits of NRG’s competitive pay structure, late shift allowance, and exposure to a wide range of vehicle types and manufacturers, giving them valuable experience that sets them up for long-term success in the trade.

A Milestone for Diversity

This year’s celebration also marked a proud milestone – the recognition of NRG’s first female HGV apprentice to complete the programme.

While HGV maintenance remains a traditionally male-dominated field, NRG is committed to encouraging more women to explore careers in technical and mechanical roles.

“At first it’s a bit daunting, because it’s a male environment,” she explained. “But once you’re in, everyone’s really supportive – it’s like one big family.”

NRG continues to explore new ways to attract and support more female apprentices, ensuring that anyone with a passion for vehicles feels welcome and empowered to apply.

Seeing the Bigger Picture

The two-day visit offered the apprentices a behind-the-scenes look at how their day-to-day work connects to NRG’s wider operations. They learned more about the company’s customer commitments, and how quick vehicle turnaround times directly impact our service and success.

“It’s been really beneficial,” one apprentice said. “You see how all the departments link together, and you understand more about why things happen the way they do. It’s eye-opening when you see the bigger picture.”

The event reinforced how important our workshop teams are to the business and gave the apprentices a chance to share ideas, ask questions, and contribute to NRG’s ongoing growth and improvement.

Looking Ahead

NRG’s apprenticeship programme continues to be a vital part of how we develop the next generation of skilled HGV technicians. With a focus on structure, mentorship, and opportunity, it provides a clear and rewarding pathway into a long-term career.

We’re incredibly proud of all our newly qualified apprentices for their hard work, commitment, and professionalism throughout their journey. They embody the NRG values of teamwork, integrity, and excellence, and we can’t wait to see what they achieve next.

Congratulations to our new HGV Technicians and welcome to the next stage of your NRG journey.
