Russell Markstein Named Industry Personality of the Year

A big congratulations are in order for our very own Russell Markstein, who was honoured with the Industry Personality of the Year award at this year’s Fleet Vision International Magazine Award. This recognition highlights not only his exceptional career but also his unwavering dedication to  the fleet management industry.

With nearly four decades of experience in the fleet management and hire industry, Russell has established himself as a true icon. His remarkable journey is marked by his deep industry knowledge, commercial acumen, and a relentless commitment to sustainability. His leadership has driven the company to remarkable success, and his influence extends far beyond the confines of his organisation.

From pioneering initiatives in sustainable fleet solutions to advocating for electric vehicles (EVs), Russell has been at the forefront of the industry’s transformation. NRG Riverside has experienced impressive business growth while also making notable progress in cutting emissions, enhancing air quality, and setting a standard for the industry.

Russell’s influence reaches beyond business success; it’s about creating a future where sustainability and environmental responsibility are prioritised. He has been instrumental in several ground breaking projects, including:

  • Launching the UK’s first fully electric food waste fleet for Basildon Council, which is expected to save over 900 tonnes of CO2e.
  • Collaborating with Speedy Hire to procure large volumes of electric vehicles, improving both efficiency and sustainability for their fleets.
  • Leading the charge in electric HGVs, particularly with the City of London, which became home to the UK’s first fleet of fully electric heavy goods vehicles (HGVs).

Russell’s initiatives have not only transformed his business but also created tangible environmental benefits that will be felt for years to come. His leadership has demonstrated that sustainable fleet solutions are not just possible, they are profitable and scalable.

Ann-Marie Knegt, Head of the Fleet Vision International Awards judging panel, commented: ‘The submissions in this category were all exceptional. However, Russell’s entry stood out to the judges. Russ has been a pivotal figure in fleet management at NRG Riverside for nearly four decades, championing sustainability and electric vehicles. He launched the UK’s first fully electric food waste fleet for Basildon Council, projected to save over 900 tonnes of CO2e. Collaborating with Speedy Hire, Russ helped procure large volumes of electric vehicles for its fleet, enhancing operational efficiency and sustainability. Following the collapse of Go Plant, he ensured service continuity for councils by acquiring 134 trucks. Russ was instrumental to implementing the first fleet of fully electric HGVs in the UK with the City of London. The judges agreed that Russell’s efforts have significantly reduced emissions and advanced sustainable fleet solutions in the UK. The NRG team crafted the submission exceedingly well, and the judges found that Russell deserved to be crowned Industry Personality of the Year or, alternatively, deserved a Life Time Achievement Award.’

Russell’s career has left an indelible mark on both the fleet management sector and the broader environmental landscape. His efforts have not only improved operational efficiencies but have made a tangible impact on air quality and sustainability in local communities.

We are incredibly proud to see Russell’s achievements celebrated and recognised at the Fleet Vision International Awards. This award is a testament to his dedication, vision, and the lasting impact he has made on the fleet management industry.
